Wed 6:25 pm +00:00, 7 May 2025A senior Russian official launched a scathing attack on Britain’s VE Day commemorations, accusing the UK of letting “neo-Nazis march in London”. Maria Zakharova’s outrageous comments, a reference to the involvement of Ukrainian troops in Monday’s procession through the capital, parrot Vladimir Putin‘s untrue claim that Ukraine is a “neo-Nazi regime”.
In an interview with state TV, the Kremlin’s foreign ministry spokeswoman said: “They let neo-Nazis march in London while pretending to honour the victory over Nazism. That’s not remembrance, it’s betrayal. Those marching today…tear down Soviet monuments, exhume honoured soldiers, and now they walk with the British.”
She said the UK was a “a zombified society fed not history, but historical nonsense” and accused the British of diminishing Russia’s role in defeating Germany during the Second World War.
A group of Ukrainian troops joined around 1,000 British servicemen and servicewomen on parade on Monday as the UK kicked off four days of commemorations marking 80 years since Nazi Germany formally surrendered to the Allies in 1945.
The Ukrainians marched from outside Parliament to Buckingham Palace, carrying the Ukrainian flag in front of thousands of Britons.
Mr Putin has falsely claimed that one of the reasons behind Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine launched in 2022 was to “denazify” the country.
Ms Zakharova also used the interview with state media as an opportunity to hit out at Britain’s ambassador to Russia, Nigel Casey.
She told the Russian TV presenter: “I’m looking at you, because I find it repugnant to look at the British ambassador, but I will address him nonetheless.
“Britain continues to pursue the wrong strategy, century after century.
“While they are trying to apply new technological capabilities, using manipulation, schemes, and provocations to once again declare some kind of strategic defeat and attempt to implement it, Russia is moving forward!”
She later took to social media platform Telegram to continue her war of words with the UK.
Imagining a situation where the UK is at war with Russia, she wrote: “Both princes [William and Harry] and the king will lead British bankers, designers and, of course, scientists into battle.
“Liz Truss will cover her rear in a tank.
“Boris Johnson will parachute in with British flags in his hands.
“Theresa May will finish everyone off with a dance and tales about ‘Novichok’.”
