The US proxies in Syria are the Kurds who hold the oil producing areas. So it’s quite a stretch to see the Jihadis as the tool of NATO. It’s more likely they are to some extent tools of Turkey. The loyalty of Turkey to NATO or Israel is less than 100%. The final picture is not yet in place. The Jihadis were trained and equipped by Turkey to meet Turkish aims. Mercouris is interesting explaining how Assad turned down the chance of vast Russian investment in 2018, and never got the economy going after Russians helped him win the civil war. Assad also turned down the chance to be part of the Chinese New Silk Rd. Economic failure led on to the current dire state of the country. Assad also refused to hold talks with Turkey. He dismissed his best officers who had run the war, and possibly appointed soldiers on a political basis of loyalty to himself. Serial failure on all fronts seems to be the hallmark of the man with tragic consequences for his country. With Assad failing to edge out the Americans from the oil producing areas, allowing the Kurds to set up an independent zone, failure to take back the Syrian refugees from Turkey, and his failure to meet Erdogan at all, or even talk to him, Erdogan decided to move on the situation himself. Assad patched up relations with the other Arab countries according to Mercouris, but ignored Erdogan, who took this as a snub. Many other fascinating details in the link. Assad’s stubbornness worked in the war but wasted the peace. Fears for the Syrian people expressed by Mercouris, Christian people under serious threat at the hands of the Jihadis. Looting. And internecine war could follow. He hopes he’s wrong. Will Turkey try to control Syria in chaos? Israel might find the Jihadis are favourable to the Palestinians. The Neocons wanted Assad gone. Trump wants to get uninvolved with Syria, maybe pull out the troops. Russia will inevitably withdraw from Syria and refocus on Ukraine, after eight successful years maintaining stability in Syria with about 5,000 personnel. Russia will be even more wary of getting involved in the Middle East in future.
