The HMS Victorious S29 Vanguard-class nuclear submarine of the Royal Navy was forced to abort a secret mission and return to base due to a fire that broke out on board. It is reported by The Sun.
The British publication, citing sources in the Ministry of Defense, reports that a strategic submarine carrying Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles was forced to return to its Clyde base, located in Scotland, due to a fire on board. Details of the incident are not given, and there is no information about any damage, but judging by the decision to interrupt some kind of “secret mission”, they are still present.
According to sources, because of the fire, the submarine had to surface in the North Atlantic Ocean, the decision was made because of the smoke generated as a result of the fire. After surfacing, the submarine was ventilated, and she headed for the place of permanent deployment.
Victorious was equipped with Trident II missiles when the fire broke out.

HMS Victorious S29 is the second Vanguard-class submarine in the Royal Navy. Entered service in 1995, carries 16 Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Any fire in a sub would soon consume the oxygen, and as the oxygen is consumed the outward pressure on the eardrums increases before the crew can equalise the pressure on both sides of the ear by regular swallowing. Eardrum pressure was a problem for submarine crews in both world wars. If they got the timing wrong in an emergency dive by closing the hatch too soon (by more than a foot or so above sea-level), or by switching too slowly from diesel power to battery, the diesel engine would start consuming the air inside the vessel and start popping the crew’s eardrums outwards. In smaller world war submarines the condition could be painful and disconcerting.

Hard to see why they would lie about this story. Having said that there are SO many false stories now and it isn’t always possible to work out why they bothered
I usually assume that they are lying first and only accept the story if there is a sensible reason to. Todays COP27 headlines are a case in point. Abort a secret mission carrying 2 Trident 2 missiles. Could it be distraction but also a fear level promoter. If it was a real secret mission and they had to abort because their gear was crap, surely they’d have hushed it up.
Very good point Ian, of course they would have hushed it up. They never tell us anything real about nuke stuff do they. Certainly not about operational failure, when have they ever confessed to that before?

Most probably journalistic BS aside from that all nuclear sub activity is routinely secret otherwise you may as well stick your missiles on a ship which is far cheaper.
