The nuclear submarine HMS Victorious S29 of the British Navy interrupted missions due to a fire on board

Today the nuclear submarine HMS Victorious S29 of the British Navy interrupted missions due to a fire on board

The HMS Victorious S29 Vanguard-class nuclear submarine of the Royal Navy was forced to abort a secret mission and return to base due to a fire that broke out on board. It is reported by The Sun.

The British publication, citing sources in the Ministry of Defense, reports that a strategic submarine carrying Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles was forced to return to its Clyde base, located in Scotland, due to a fire on board. Details of the incident are not given, and there is no information about any damage, but judging by the decision to interrupt some kind of “secret mission”, they are still present.

According to sources, because of the fire, the submarine had to surface in the North Atlantic Ocean, the decision was made because of the smoke generated as a result of the fire. After surfacing, the submarine was ventilated, and she headed for the place of permanent deployment.

Victorious was equipped with Trident II missiles when the fire broke out.

– the source said, adding that nothing is known about the submarine’s mission, but it was not a standard combat duty. The command of the Navy also refused to give any information, saying that they do not comment on the combat missions of the submarines.

HMS Victorious S29 is the second Vanguard-class submarine in the Royal Navy. Entered service in 1995, carries 16 Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles.

  1. Mick says:

Any fire in a sub would soon consume the oxygen, and as the oxygen is consumed the outward pressure on the eardrums increases before the crew can equalise the pressure on both sides of the ear by regular swallowing. Eardrum pressure was a problem for submarine crews in both world wars. If they got the timing wrong in an emergency dive by closing the hatch too soon (by more than a foot or so above sea-level), or by switching too slowly from diesel power to battery, the diesel engine would start consuming the air inside the vessel and start popping the crew’s eardrums outwards. In smaller world war submarines the condition could be painful and disconcerting.

Any fire in a sub would begin consuming the oxygen, and as the oxygen is consumed the outward pressure on the eardrums increases before the crew can equalise the pressure on both sides of the ear by regular swallowing.

Eardrum pressure was a constant problem for submarine crews in both world wars. If they got the timing wrong in an emergency dive by closing the hatch too soon (by more than a foot or so above sea-level), or by switching over too slowly from diesel power to battery, the diesel engine would start consuming the air inside the vessel and start popping the crew’s eardrums outwards. In smaller world war subs the condition could last hours and be painful and disconcerting, especially when under attack from the surface.

It wouldn’t post the first one…then it did. What a pain!

No matter about the double post, it is interesting info Mick

Does this info imply that the story is false, or just that it’s difficult for the crew to cope with a fire onboard?

Hard to see why they would lie about this story. Having said that there are SO many false stories now and it isn’t always possible to work out why they bothered

I usually assume that they are lying first and only accept the story if there is a sensible reason to. Todays COP27 headlines are a case in point. Blatant BS, clear lies, ridiculously partial information and the story pumped out in the terminally corrupt MSM in UNISON. At the same time it is probably accepted by the majority of folk as real

The Sun also reported on this .. an electrical fire implies particularly nasty toxic fumes. Also “overdue maintenance”.

A NUCLEAR-armed Navy submarine had to abort a top secret mission because of a life-or-death fire beneath the waves.

HMS Victorious was carrying Trident 2 missiles when the electrical blaze broke out.

The 30-year-old vessel — which is overdue a major refit — broke surface in the North Atlantic to flush out toxic fumes.

After assessing the damage, the captain ordered a return to base at HMNB Clyde in Faslane.

Abort a secret mission carrying 2 Trident 2 missiles. Could it be distraction but also a fear level promoter. If it was a real secret mission and they had to abort because their gear was crap, surely they’d have hushed it up.

    • pete fairhurst says:

Very good point Ian, of course they would have hushed it up. They never tell us anything real about nuke stuff do they. Certainly not about operational failure, when have they ever confessed to that before?

So yes, it’s probably more fear porn for the masses or something similar

    • sovereigntea says:

Most probably journalistic BS aside from that all nuclear sub activity is routinely secret otherwise you may as well stick your missiles on a ship which is far cheaper.

Journalist has no experience of the Navy.

Journalist first joined The Sun in 2003 as a graduate trainee and rejoined in 2020, as Defence Editor, after working as a foreign correspondent for The Times.
