Typical UK wokeness. I’ve had loads of students who wear the hijab or the dupatta and they are certainly not people from backward villages. Two Yemeni sisters were too advanced for my advanced conversation class and they were a delight to teach.
There are plenty of hijab wearers in Geneva and they mind their own business like the rest of us. I’m sure they would be horrified by this stupid idea.
Each to their own, the hijab is a personal choice
But I do find the full, or even partial, covering of the face to be very offensive. I’ve no problem if the full face is visible
I instinctively think that anyone who covers all, or part, of their face has got something to hide, and so should be treated with suspicion. What have you got to hide? Why can’t you show us your face so we can remember you?
I felt the same about the covid masks too
It’s a cultural thing and Europeans want to be open and honest, to see and be seen. So if you don’t want to conform with our cultural norm then, go and live somewhere that face covering is more socially acceptable. Don’t expect us to change to suit your foreign ways
Pete, you’re talking about the niqab. Neither the hijab nor the dupatta cover the face and, although this is a very multi-cultural city, I’ve only rarely seen someone wearing a niqab and that only in the summer time when many Gulf Arabs come here to avoid the heat of their region.
As an aside, I didn’t muzzle up, with the excuse that I have a heart problem and I need air to breathe, and when I had to speak to someone wearing one, I pretended not to hear the reply so that, after two or three repetitions, they were forced to pull it down.
I’m no expert Belyi, so I Googled Hijab images before I posted. I mainly found full head coverings with a fully visible face
But some were with just the eyes showing, the rest of the face and head being covered. The Burka shows nothing of the head or face whatsoever
Those types are the ones that rile me, the full visible face ones are fine. The hidden face ones are akin to a bandits mask as far as I’m concerned. Seriously weird, who else wears a mask in public? What have these folks got to hide? How are supposed to know who they are if we can’t see them? Could be anyone under there
