He arrived very early; 4pm for a 7pm start. We both stood by the WWI 1914-1918 memorial. The attaché, Colonel Aşcı, lost family members at the battles of Çanakkale and Gallipoli. As we stood, just the two of us, he recalled words Atatürk said of the fallen during battle:
Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours… You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. I feel no inclination nor any obligation to be anywhere near those gathering for Remembrance Day. I hold the 7 names on our village memorial privately, where ever I go, not just on 11:11, but 365 days of the year.
