If there are 7-day blackouts when really they could allow us minimal electricity per day I suspect the purpose is to ensure all the food in people’s freezers must go to waste. It’s another attack on food supply. As there’d be no power to cook the food as it thaws then most of it will be wasted. I have some fuel and camping stoves but even I as a prepper would be unlikely to cook all the food in my small freezer before a lot would need throwing out, so people with bigger freezers and lots more food but no means of cooking it will really see waste. We couldn’t give much away to others to save waste as we’ll all have the same problem – lots of food we can’t cook nor give away. It may also result in disposal problems, bad food piling up in bins, not being taken away, and feeding all sorts of pests through a hard winter.

You are absolutely right, Mick. I am trying to use what is in my freezer now rather than put more in for these very reasons, but it is difficult after so many years of using a freezer in the way I do. Batch cooking etc. And yes, I have thought of the waste disposal problem in general, if we have a huge decrease in working population.

I too have a small freezer so I bought a 150w solar panel, a deep cycle 105wh caravan battery and cheap inverter all from EBay. It will run the freezer for a day or two but not a week.

Learn how to salt meat down. Not ideal, but edible in an emergency.

Your head is the main thing to keep warm. He is scare mongering about the log burners. He is scaremongering generally. Buy some wood and make a fire in your garden to cook on. We’re not talking Cordon blue, a tin of soup or some boiled potatoes. Yes your pans will get black, but it’s easy. Look out bush craft videos. If you get cold, cuddle someone in bed. I’m always warm in bed, but I’m best cuddled in the dark.

If you can’t be cuddled in the dark when the power is off then I highly recommend getting a Selk Bag.

I bought one of these a few years ago and on first wearing it in winter with no heating on I went and opened the patio door to let the heat out. Then I remembered the heating was off, the house was frozen and it was me that was too hot in the Selk Bag.
