UK MP Andrew Bridgen Criticizes WHO’s New Health Regulations as a Power Grab

The proposed IHR and Pandemic Treaty seek to centralize authority within the WHO, granting the Director General vast powers to determine the classification of pandemics and Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEIC). This transfer of decision-making authority, according to Bridgen, amounts to a limitless mandate of dictates, eroding the autonomy of nations to manage their own health issues.
Bridgen’s criticism stems from concerns that the WHO Director General could potentially enforce an outright prohibition, backed by punitive measures, on the use of medications that are deemed “WHO-banned,” irrespective of their proven effectiveness. He cites the handling of COVID-19 as an example, where the WHO allegedly restricted medical professionals and pharmacies from prescribing, recommending, and selling medications that showed efficacy against the virus.
The MP’s statement reflects the wider apprehension surrounding the concentration of power in supranational bodies, particularly during times of global health crises. Critics argue that such a transfer of authority could impede timely decision-making, hinder national responses tailored to local contexts, and stifle innovation in the healthcare sector.
