My uncle and my father were both freemasons and came from good Scottish, English and Northern Irish stock. Dad was interested in all types of comparative religion and was mainly Spiritualist in his ideas. Many people use it for business although he frowned on that.

My grandfather was a Freemason too, and also my father in law, he was Jewish. No, Pete. I don’t imagine that they are low level, but I think it a pity they all are tarred with the same brush. I suppose it’s like any group of people; some join to advance in business; some join because they’re interested in the ritual and some rise to higher levels,
I can’t forget Ronald Bernard the Dutch banker who was prepared to go along with his group to a certain level but absolutely drew the line at going any further. I don’t imagine for one moment that Dad and my uncle were offered the possibility to go further and, although it used to be very secret, it is much more talked about now.
As for getting a lighter sentence, a neighbour who was accused of making a pass at one of his students (many years before the case) was pleased to know that the judge was also a homosexual. It worked in his favour and he was acquitted.

Although, by the 1960’s, there were books available. My father came across Masons when he worked in the Waterguard, in Liverpool, at that time [latterly Customs and Excise, now HMRC]. Waterguard dealt with all ports and coastlines of this beautiful island. He was tapped by a member of the craft but he did his own due diligence and refused. He was a scathing critic as a result of this experience, didn’t help his promotion prospects either, but he was a man of principle.
