    Excellent!

Back in the sixties then my Uncle Joe, mum’s bro, worked for a shipping agent in Liverpool and one of his jobs was to give his customers a good time in Scouseland. He usually gave them a very good time too, he knew his way round, say no more…

One Saturday night then Joe, my Auntie Lynn and my parents too, went to a Dave Allen show in a Liverpool nightclub. Dave did his hilarious act and then joined the punters at their tables after the show. Uncle Joe was a schmoozer and was so well regarded at the club that they all got to enjoy an after hours session with Dave after the club closed

My folks never stopped talking about Dave for days afterwards. Said that he was a genius natural comedian and was the same in real life as on stage. A irrepressible natural talent who filled any room that he was in

He usually ended his act by saying “May your God go with you”. They don’t make ’em like that any more

Joe told me on his deathbed a few years back that, in 1940 when he was starting out in the shipping business, then, he went to work one morning and his office in the heart of the shipping district was just a pile of bricks. It had been totally destroyed in an air raid the night before

He did his national service in the Royal Navy as soon as he was 18, a couple of years later. He got lucky, spent a large part of his time in Alexandria in Egypt, well away from any action
