An otter and a deer seen in Shrewsbury town centre

No Police note. Rangers? Who are they I wonder….
I better declare an interest here. I am the prospective candidate for the West Mercia area Policing and Crime Commission for The English Democrats (Teds). That otter is definitely innocent….
Humans need the same level of service I would say – as otters get. I’ll put that in my manifesto. As for the otter, I suppose the number of fish in the river is less than it was earlier in the year and he’s looking around to feed his family. Might I recommend the fish in the Public Market – the best fishmonger in the county.

The otter, assumed to have taken to dry land from the River Severn, was seen wandering up Pride Hill on Saturday.

Onlookers found the Shrewsbury Town Rangers on duty in the town centre and, while the task might not have been in their job description, they were happy to step in and help the slippery customer.

Helen Ball, clerk of Shrewsbury Town Council said: “The rangers were able to catch him and pop him back in the river. An otter had a potter up Pride Hill is not something you see everyday.”

One of those who spotted the otter was Rosie Johnston.

Mrs Johnston said: “My husband and I saw him coming out of Windsor Place, cross Castle Street and go down the passage between Mother Hubbard’s and My Tan shops.

“We then watched as someone went in the back door of Primark, and the otter slipped in just before the door shut. We couldn’t believe our eyes.”

There have been many sightings of otters in the Severn across Shropshire and Shropshire Wildlife Trust has a Shropshire Otter Project to help secure their presence and increase their chance of survival.

Earlier this year an early morning worker in Shropshire caught on video a young deer wandering down Shrewsbury’s Wyle Cop
