How quaint is that? Yet another inconvenient truth about the world we live in is discredited by the masters of the universe with their old stand-by ‘conspiracy theory’ label in hopes to keep folks online from having real discussions about what’s going on around us.
I mean… that’s kind of the core of Dead Internet theory (DIT), isn’t it?
‘The dead Internet theory is a conspiracy theory that asserts, due to a coordinated and intentional effort, the Internet now consists mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation to control the population and minimize organic human activity.[1][2][3][4][5] Proponents of the theory believe these social bots were created intentionally to help manipulate algorithms and boost search results in order to manipulate consumers.[6][7] Some proponents of the theory accuse government agencies of using bots to manipulate public perception.[2][6] The date given for this “death” is generally around 2016 or 2017.[2][8][9] The dead Internet theory has gained traction because many of the observed phenomena are quantifiable, such as increased bot traffic, but the literature on the subject does not support the full theory’ Wikipedia
Of course DIT is real. You feel it every day. Bots jump into your chats on X, they leave comments on your videos, they seem to gravitate out of nowhere in support of the next big thing in the alt-media influencer world.
Do you run a YT channel? Are there certain words you find you can’t say? Certain ideas you dare not bring up? Do you find yourself self-censoring every day in order to appease the all important algorithm for clicks and views and money?
Back in the day the internet was wide open. A true marketplace for ideas, good and bad. People posted what they genuinely felt in passionate terms without regard to any backlash.
Those days are gone. In their place we have ‘content creators’ and ‘influencers’ who don’t believe a damn thing they say they just parrot what is popular and allowed and promoted by the algorithms.
This is not by chance or by any natural progression of the medium. This is by design.
At one time back right after 9/11, the Cheney administration (yes, Dick ran it) talked about total informational awareness. They wanted to know what everyone was saying online and they wanted the ability to censor it all, to control it.
Back then while most of us still had a spine, there was backlash to this fascist, Orwellian dream of theirs, so they had to shut down the official version of the algorithms they were working on… officially… and instead handed it over to Peter Thiel and Palantir.
Palantir is one of the wealthiest companies in the world today. Go figure.
Of course they wanted to control the exchange of information and ideas online. They were heading into the project for the New American Century and the Global War OF Terror. 7 Countries in 5 Years. Extreme Rendition. Torture. Regime Change.
Walking on the Dark Side for a While.
Of course they needed to kill off the free and open internet… and so they did.
