Dark Vorkuta

Vorkuta is a coal-mining district, situated in the northeast of European Russia, just north of the Arctic Circle. With it’s satellite towns, Vorkuta forms the so-called Vorkuta Ring or Vorkuta Circle, which included such towns as Severny, Tsementnozavodsky, Yur-Shor, Promyshlenny, Vorgashor, Komsomolsky, Mulda, Zapolyarny, Oktyabrsky, Sovetsky and others. Their population was employed in coal mines and other industrial and military facilities. After collapse of the Soviet Union, many mines were closed due to accidents and high operating costs. The towns of Vorkuta Ring became partially or completely abandoned, some were demolished.

Abandoned Abkhazia

Abkhazia is a partially recognized state located on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, south of the Greater Caucasus mountains. The population of Abkhazia fell from 525000 in 1989 to 216000 in 2003. As well as other states of the former Soviet Union, in the 90s Abkhazia experienced a catastrophic industrial decline, exacerbated by war, the breakdown of economic ties and population decline. Almost all old Soviet industrial facilities were abandoned.

Dzerzhinsk is a city in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located along the Oka River. In Soviet times, it was the largest center of the chemical industry in the USSR. In this connection the ecological situation in the region was in an unsatisfactory condition. The city was also among Soviet’s principal production sites for chemical weapons. Nowadays some of the chemical factories, such as Korund, Kaprolaktam, OrgSteklo, Zarya, Dzerzhinsk Him Mash are partially or completely abandoned.
