Apparently, the artist intended to symbolise the void left by the lost babies and children during war with the ‘evil’ Russian invaders. Where baby Jesus would normally be, there is a black void. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it seems the Vatican has failed to behold any beauty in this case.
