    In the end the only person who crushes your soul is yourself. We learned at prep school in the 1960s to agree with everything outwardly and show enthusiasm for approved subjects but inwardly have your own world where the inflictors of the regime were not necessarily agreed with, and you kept interest in other things secretly to yourself. Such is the requirement of education. The hardest part was not to live under an authoritarian regime that told you how to think and act, but when it ended. You then had to create an entire world for yourself which was a terrifying prospect. By taking one step at a time, you could build your own mind, and see that your life was more than the narrow structure the government had tried to saddle you with. I guess we’re returning to something akin to prep school with psychological torture being applied rather than physical.
