Patrick Lancaster accompanies Russian soldiers searching for families sheltering in a church
Wed 8:02 pm +01:00, 18 May 2022Patrick accompanies Russian soldiers on a reccy to assess the well being of families with children who have been sheltering in the basement of the buildings of a monastery for 2.5 months; the village has been partly taken by the Russians/DPR, but the monastery is only 500 metres from the front line, and under constant shelling. One woman has recently been killed. The soldiers establish contact with the families and tell them they will make a plan to evacuate them in protected vehicles as soon as possible. The children are struggling with living in the dark for so long, and have been ill. The children sing and recite poems for the soliders. Soliders tell Patrick they must move quickly and leave because their presence will have been spotted and will attract further shelling of the monastery and church, hence the running between buildings.
