The UK on Tuesday threatened to ban Twitter altogether and potentially jail Elon Musk if he violates their incoming “Online Safety Bill” by allowing free speech on his platform.

The move came just hours after the EU threatened to ban Twitter entirely if Musk allows free speech on the platform and the US threatened to “reform” Section 230 to hold social media companies “accountable” for the “harms they cause.”

Britain’s Online Safety Bill would make it mandatory for social media services to tackle both illegal posts as well as material that is “legal but harmful,” a vague definition that has attracted criticism from some in the tech industry over concerns that it may stifle free speech.

“Twitter and all social media platforms must protect their users from harm on their sites,” a U.K. government spokesperson told CNBC.

“We are introducing new online safety laws to safeguard children, prevent abusive behaviour and protect free speech,” the spokesperson said. “All tech firms with users in the U.K. will need to comply with the new laws or face hefty fines and having their sites blocked.”

The stakes for platforms like Twitter would be even higher under the Online Safety Bill, which threatens jail time for company executives for serious violations, as well as penalties of up to 10% of annual global sales.

The legislation, which is yet to be approved by U.K. lawmakers, is expected to become law later this year.

Musk said earlier in the day after the EU’s threats were issued that, “The extreme antibody reaction from those who fear free speech says it all.”

“By ‘free speech’, I simply mean that which matches the law. I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law. If people want less free speech, they will ask government to pass laws to that effect. Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people,” Musk said.

It’s truly remarkable how these Western regimes will condemn China and Russia for cracking down on dissent while they actively wage total war against free speech and free expression in their own countries against their own subjects.

    Seriously? People actually believe that the spook baby Musk is going to be the saviour of free speech? Ha ha ha

    Musk is an over promoted deep state asset, whose personal bio was thoroughly exposed in 2015!

    “So why do I think these companies are fake? We’ll start with Musk’s links to Mike Griffin. Griffin was head of NASA from 2005 to 2009, but on Musk’s page we learn that Griffin also worked for In-Q-Tel,
    the venture capital arm of the CIA! That is probably the biggest red flag on the entire page.

    Curiously, that information has been scrubbed off Griffin’s own page. What exactly is In-Q-Tel?

    assumed they do this to facilitate domestic covert operations of various sorts. But we have tripped over much evidence companies are created for reasons even more fundamental to the American way”

      It may stifle free speech?????? I assume that stifling free speech is the whole point of it, in fact it’s only purpose.

      Protecting Children, (Bollocks) they’re teaching kids perversion at school. A woman caught her nine year old looking at porn pics on Google images, he’d typed in nude girls, “try it”, that’s how desperate they are to protect kids.
      The only and whole purpose of the online harms bill is to shut us all up.

        Ok Ian, I totally get that, yes stifling free speech is the whole point of Bill. It’s just that the article read as a major Musk promotion with all those leading Musk PR photos. And also portraying that fraud as the saviour of free speech!

        Btw, the most bizarre Musk stuff [lots to choose from] is his SpaceX rockets that defy the laws of physics. Rockets can only go in one direction, forwards. This is O level physics

        Rockets landing backwards are a physical impossibility, they are inherently unstable. Yet Musk expects us to believe that his SpaceX rockets can go up into space, deliver their payload, then come down to Earth and land backwards on a platform floating in the ocean!!

        Utterly ridiculous, the vids of that have got to be CGI. But nobody seems to notice! The degradation of our education system has got a lot to answer for

        I never saw Musk’s reversing rockets pete. NASA are bad enough. We can’t get through the Van Allen belt, but could before we knew about it. Another was, that they had the technology but lost it. Possibly when they recorded over the video tapes.

        Yes Ian, SpaceX delivers exactly the same service to the US government that the fraudulent NASA used to do. Only now there is a big fat “profit” for SpaceX and a big fat “salary” for the poster boy. It’s similar to most so called “privatisation”, yet more blatant ripping off of taxpayers

        The NASA frauds and deceptions are well documented, and are ongoing. Yes, the whole “moon landing” story has more holes than a Swiss cheese. Yet they are selling essentially the same BS to the younger generations via Musk and his SpaceX nonsense

        I find it very interesting that those pesky Russkies, as ever our enemy du jour, those evil rapists of Ukraine, must have gone along with the whole charade in the ’60’s and ’70’s. Why would they do that? What did they have to gain? Are they really our enemy?

      I’ll certainly check them out pete. Re why do countries go along with the hoaxes, I often ponder these things. I mean, at the moment for example, Putin is the bogey man, yet appears to have the same controllers and friends as our Western puppets. TBH it’s no wonder that they want to shut us up. There are so many holes in all their enterprises.
