Russia begins batch production of S-500 Prometheus air defense system
MOSCOW, April 25. /TASS/. Russia’s newest missile air defense system S-500 Prometheus, developed by the Almaz-Antey concern, has begun to be batch-produced and will be provided for the armed forces within the deadlines established under the state defense order, the company’s CEO, Yan Novikov, has said.
“At the moment, the S-500 system, boasting the latest achievements in domestic science and engineering, has begun to be batch-produced. Its combat capabilities surpass by far those of the previously created air defense systems. The S-500 may well become the backbone of Russia’s aerospace defense. It will be delivered to the armed forces within the deadlines established under the state defense order,” Novikov told National Defense magazine in an interview on the occasion of the company’s 20th anniversary. Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said on September 16, 2021, that the S-500 would begin to be supplied to the armed forces upon completion of government certification tests. Earlier, in July 2021 the Defense Ministry said that the S-500 had carried out test combat launches at the Kapustin Yar proving ground. The expected tactical and technical parameters were confirmed.
The S-500 was designed to hit all existing and future aerospace attack weapons of a hypothetical enemy within a wide range of altitudes and speeds. It is to replace its predecessor S-400 Triumf.

The newest Russian S-500 Prometheus air defense system has been put into mass production. It will be delivered to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in accordance with contracts concluded with the Ministry of Defense.
The CEO of the Almaz-Antey concern Yan Novikov confirmed that “batch production of the S-500 system has been organized using the latest achievements of domestic science and technology. The combat capabilities of this system significantly exceed the capabilities of previously created air defense systems and air defense systems.”
The first sample of a promising S-500 entered service with the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in October 2021. The complex was placed at the disposal of the 1st Air Defense and Special Purpose Missile Defense Army and was deployed for the defense of the capital.
The second set should enter the troops this year.
According to Mr Novikov, the promising S-500 significantly surpasses its predecessors, including the S-400 system. However, most of the characteristics of the S-500 Prometheus complex are strictly classified. According to some reports, the promising complex is able to destroy hypersonic targets and even hit vehicles in low Earth orbit.
Russian defense firm working on improved Kalibr cruise missile — CEO
MOSCOW, April 25. /TASS/. Russia’s Almaz-Antey defense manufacturer is working on the improved version of the Kalibr cruise missile that will feature better performance and higher combat efficiency, Company CEO Yan Novikov said on Monday.
“Naturally, the work on improving the Kalibr missiles is ongoing and the Defense Ministry displays high interest in this type of weapons. We are planning to boost its performance characteristics and raise the efficiency of its combat employment. We are set to get a weapon that will considerably surpass the current generation,” the chief executive said in an interview with the National Defense magazine on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the company’s creation.
Back in the Soviet period, specialists always integrated high upgrade potential in new weapons. Engineers begin thinking about weapon further development already at the stage of creating its prototype, he emphasized.
The Kalibr is a Russian cruise missile developed and produced by the Yekaterinburg-based Novator design bureau (part of the Almaz-Antey Group). Currently, the Russian troops use two modifications of Kalibr cruise missiles: the shipborne Kalibr-NK and the submarine-launched Kalibr-PL. The cruise missile became operational in the Russian Navy in 2012. Russia employed Kalibr cruise missiles for the first time during its military operation in Syria. As follows from reports by Russia’s Defense Ministry, Russian forces employed Kalibr cruise missiles 13 times, launching at least 99 munitions against terrorist targets.
Russian S-350 missile system capable of striking future air attack weapons — defense firm
MOSCOW, April 25. /TASS/. The S-350 ‘Vityaz’ short-to-medium-range battlefield surface-to-air missile system engineered by the Almaz-Antey defense manufacturer is capable of striking future air attack weapons, Company CEO Yan Novikov said on Monday.
“We have developed a good and compact system that performs all of its functions far better than its predecessors. As its fundamental difference from all other similar systems, the Vityaz is capable of quickly aiming its missiles and scanning the space. The weapon can effectively strike both existing and future air attack weapons,” the chief executive said in an interview with the National Defense magazine on the occasion of the company’s 20th anniversary.
The S-350 outshines its rivals by the number of missiles in its ammunition load and the enhanced anti-jamming resistance of its radar that can observe the situation from all the directions thanks to its circular scanning mode. The S-350 is compatible with all air defense systems and can get information from other complexes and operate as a second tier posture in conjunction with S-400 air defenses, increasing the density of surface-to-air fire, the chief executive elaborated.
“The Vityaz is capable of providing air defense on its own. There are no other medium-range systems with such characteristics in the world,” he added.
The S-350 ‘Vityaz’ was engineered by the Almaz-Antey defense manufacturer as a battlefield air defense weapon capable of striking targets within a radius of 60 km and at an altitude of 30 km. The air defense system is designed to fight both aerodynamic and ballistic targets. An S-350 launcher is outfitted with 12 surface-to-air missiles.
