Hungary’s nationalist prime minister Viktor Orbán has declared victory in the national election, claiming a mandate for a fourth term as a still-incomplete vote count showed a strong lead for his rightwing party.

‘The whole world has seen tonight in Budapest that Christian democratic politics, conservative civic politics and patriotic politics have won,’ Orbán told a gathered crowd.

The opposition leader, Péter Márki-Zay, conceded defeat, saying ‘the results show that after 12 years of brainwashing, Orbán can always win any election in this country’
