This statement clearly implies that Paterson believes we are legally already out. As he is writing in the Telegraph, this is another indication from that broadsheet of its legal position on Brexit, joining the Mail and the Express. They all believe we left on the 29th March.
The Tory MP for North Shropshire described the current Brexit position as an “embarrassment” and called on the Prime Minister to cancel the upcoming European elections. In an article for the Daily Telegraph, he heavily criticises Theresa May’s “insulting” Brexit negotiations and unwillingness to countenance no deal. In order to carry out Britain’s successful departure from the EU, Mr Paterson says no deal preparations need to be accelerated, as “we need to be prepared to walk away at any time”.
TAP – This statement clearly implies that Paterson believes we are legally already out. As he is writing in the Telegraph, this is another indication from that broadsheet of its legal position on Brexit. The Times is totally silent – so far – which, in a way, counterintuitively, shows how strong the legal case is. We left legally on the 29th and so can can leave at any moment from hereon, in effect Paterson is saying – as and when Paterson/IDS can line up the troops to throw out May and bring in a new leader. The opinion has been expressed in The Telegraph that Conservative MPs can change the leader selection rules at any time with a simple majority. That would expose May to a second 1922 process within less than a year from the last attempt.
That is assuming 10,000 signatures of Party members demanding a change in the rules does not emerge. 10,000 sounds a lot but it’s only a hundred signatures from a hundred Constituencies. Surely MI5 don’t control all the Constituency Associations so they can block that as well!!! Maybe they do. In which case it will be down to Conservative MPs to fight their way off the beach and up the cliff – or face electoral destruction at the hands of Farage. Time is of the essence. Get a move on, ladies and gentlemen, or another stitch-up will soon become apparent.
