Fracker Leadsom the loathsome new Environment Secretary

Andrea Leadsom named Environment Secretary in Theresa May’s cabinet

Brexit campaigner and Tory leadership contender Andrea Leadsom has been given a position in Theresa May’s Cabinet.

Mrs Leadsom was named Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs – a relatively minor Cabinet post.

The pro-Brexit MP takes over from Liz Truss who was appointed Justice Secretary after another Brexiteer, Michael Gove, was sacked this morning.

It was Mrs Leadsom’s dramatic decision on Monday to pull out the Conservative Party’s leadership contest catapulted Mrs May in Number 10.

The appointment today came amid a series of announcements which saw former policing minister Damian Green named Work and Pensions Secretary – Iain Duncan Smith’s old job.

Remain supporter Sajid Javid, a close ally of sacked ex-Chancellor George Osborne, was also moved to the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Mrs May’s Cabinet reshuffle began last night, with the new Prime Minister making the shock decision to name Boris Johnson her Foreign Secretary.

This morning she continued a brutal reorganisation that saw Nicky Morgan ousted from Education, John Whittingdale dismissed as Culture Secretary and Oliver Letwin kicked out of the Cabinet Office.

The most spectacular promotion was of little-known MP Gavin Williamson to Chief Whip, in charge of party discipline.

He was until yesterday Mr Cameron’s PPS, or Commons aide, which is the lowest rung on the ladder.

Despite reports that Jeremy Hunt had been sacked, he retained his post as Health Secretary.
