A spokesman said: “It is with the deepest regret that RMT has to confirm that our GeneralSecretary Bob Crow sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning.
“The union’s offices will be closed for the rest of the day and the union will make further announcements in due course.
“The media have been asked to respect the privacy of Bob’s friends and family at this difficult and distressing time.”
Mr Crow had recently led London Underground workers in strike action, before a second walkout planned for last month was suspended.
Speaking to Express Online, Ukip leader Nigel Farage was one of the first to pay Tribute to Mr Crow.
He said: “I am sad at the death of Bob Crow, a man who realised the dangers of the EU to the working class in this country.
“I shared a panel with him on many occasions and he was always the person I chose to sit next to in the green room or at dinner afterwards.”
