It doesn’t sound like a token gesture rebellion. John Redwood and Douglas Carswell sound very determined. This is the moment of truth. Will Conservative backbench MPs allow Cameron and Hague to piss all over them or not?
The government may well get support from Labour MPs to push through the legislation to permit EU economic rule over Britain. But if they don’t, Conservative MPs in sufficient numbers would be well able to inflict a defeat on the government over this issue.
If they don’t put up an effective rebellion, this will only assure a major surge of support for UKIP. My guess is that the trouble from the back benches is only just beginning. Tomorrow’s business in the House will give an indication.
