Three members of Ukip’s ruling body have quit in protest after Steven Woolfe was expelled from the party’s leadership race.

Mr Woolfe, the party’s migration spokesman, had been tipped to become the frontrunner in the campaign after impressing since becoming an MEP for the North West in 2014.

But Mr Woolfe, who missed the nomination deadline by 17 minutes, will not be allowed to stand.

A Ukip spokesman said: “An NEC-led panel sat yesterday afternoon to determine the eligibility of those that submitted nomination papers to stand to be Ukip’s new party leader.

“By a clear majority of NEC members Steven Woolfe MEP’s application was considered to be ineligible as a result of a late submission and as such he did not meet the eligibility criteria. His membership of the party was not in question.”

Three members of Ukip’s National Executive Committee – Victoria Ayling, Raymond Finch MEP and Michael McGough – resigned immediately after the decision was made.

TAP – Revenge must be taken against Farage for winning the referendum. He had to run to get away from the death threats. Now his favoured candidate is being hung out to dry. The Conservatives/MI5 are determined to get control of UKIP. Suzanne Evans and the like are merely the latest version of a longterm attempts at infiltration carried out to disrupt and control the party. The undoing of BREXIT requires the undoing of UKIP.  Farage wants the Constitution changed so that leaders are selected by the membership, not a committee of unknowns called the NEC.  Much is at stake.  If UKIP can be dismantled at the top, the Conservatives can safely dump BREXIT.  If UKIP holds together, BREXIT can be pushed through.  It’s the measure of Farage’s success that he’s held MI5 at bay as long as he has.

Why was it left so late in the game anyway? Or am I missing something here? When could nominations/his nomination have been submitted? Why leave it so late in/on the day? Just curious.

It’s just a play on words but isn’t ‘expelled’ a little too strong, if not the wrong word entirely? Surely “Steven Woolfe’s [Late?] Nomination for UKIP Leadership Race Rejected” would have been more apt? He can hardly be expelled if he was never in it in the first place.

Perhaps he thought he was bidding on ebay?

The item being bid on was – uncertainty. If he wasn’t sure enough to bid for leadership any sooner than a last minute attempt then it’s possibly for the best.
No one can serve Ukip better than Farage, a hard ‘act’ to follow.
