AFTER CRIMEA VOTE, MOLDOVA’S TRANSNISTRIA REGION ASKS TO JOIN RUSSIA
Politicians in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria have asked the Russian parliament to allow their territory to join the Russian Federation.
TAP – This would be very uncomfortable for Ukraine. Odessa, Ukraine’s only remaining sea port of significance (once Crimea is gone) is close to Crimea and Transnistria. Were the two to ever join up with Odessa a city of very mixed ethnicity, Ukraine would be cut off from the sea. Sevastopol has a vast grain silo for corn shipments right next to Russia’s military base where Ukraine’s corn is shipped to the world. Odessa is less significant as a port than Sevastopol, and Ukraine will have to ship most of her produce out through Crimea (soon to be Russia) as it is.
