Apollo 11’s strange first press conference

Start watching from 1 minute onwards. The footage is quite weird. Do these three astronauts look relaxed and happy at their achievement of flying to the moon and back? They look extremely nervous and worried.

The thrill of space flight?

1 Hour 14 Minutes – Apollo 11 Post Flight Press Conference.

Why do these men look and behave so oddly?

Don’t you think there should be a small sense of exhilaration?

They didn’t look like that when the publicity shots were taken.

They are military pilots who were hand-picked to be unimaginative and deliberate. They are not PR men. I can’t see a problem with their demeanour.

  2. Tapestry says:

Then why are they so nervous?

They were all warned not to tell what really happened after landing on the moon. The truth is that what they saw on the moon were numerous, large UFOs around the crater where the Lunar Module landed and that these were seen by both Armstrong and Aldrin and this frightened the hell out of them.

When they got back they were warned not to tell anyone about their encounter otherwise they would regret it.

Damn, I thought we didn’t go to the moon. Which conspiracy theory should I believe then?

  5. Tapestry says:

It’s not always possible to know what happened and is happening. You start by knowing that you’re being lied to, and that’s enough. The whole alien/off-planet story is a huge area which you could research for the rest of your life, and still not be sure about.

I’ve watched it again you’re right, they do have a strange demeanour.
I thought they were just bored, and maybe that’s all it is, because that they are bound to have done loads of lectures and so forth. But it’s funny when Collins is describing the docking procedure, the other two aren’t even looking at the screen. You would think that they would be more interested. Maybe they just had a massive row about payment per lecture, but they don’t exude any interest in space-flight.

  7. Tapestry says:

I think fear would explain their demeanour – they’ve been threatened.

  8. Levantine says:

Obviously Neil Armstrong felt more threatened than Buzz Aldrin, while Collins was relatively untouched by whatever was the issue.

I discovered this video almost exactly two years ago. Armstrong and Aldrin may have not walked on the Moon’s surface, but by this presentation they surely made me feel like stepping onto a new world.

I have watched the opening sequence to this many times and it still makes me uncomfortable to watch. There is something seriously wrong with these guys, I mean, they look like they just got caught in the local whorehouse by their pastor. In particular, the astronaut far left in the powder blue jacket. Watch him a couple of minutes into this when he stretches his neck and hunches his shoulders-watch him use his fingertips to gingerly, barely move the stack of papers in front of him. This is clearly someone under duress and is definitely resisting a flight response. He looks like he is about to melt down. The one speaking is obviously lying and is extremely nervous.
